How do you build and attract peoples trust? You start by proving that you are trustworthy. Trust is not earned but established over time through shared experiences and a pattern of reliability and learning to trust others. The way to gain a good reputation is to endeavor to be what you desire to appear. In other words, you can’t fake trustworthiness.
So many books have been written on how to earn trustworthiness but in reality, having a good character is the only way to earn a lasting trust and support of others.  You don’t just go out and buy good character neither do you develop it overnight. It comes with a pattern of behaviour, a way of living your life by certain rules. Trust is built on perception of honesty.
Below are guidelines for building the character that will earn you trust and respects of others.

DO WHAT YOU SAY YOU WILL DO.
It is amazing how many people and businesses fail to live up to their promises but still expect people to trust them. If you consistently live up to the expectation that you create, when your actions follow your words, you don’t have to work to impress people or win them over. In time, they will see the strength of your character and line up to be on your support team.

LISTEN WITHOUT JUDGEMENT
There is no greater favour you can do for someone than to be a devoted and trusted listener, not an adviser or counselor, simply a listener. Listen without judgment and let the speaker find the way.

PAY WHAT YOU OWE AND WHEN DUE
This sounds almost revolutionary in a time of credit cards and delayed-payment plans, but in personal transactions there is nothing that builds trust faster than paying debts promptly and paying for services when they are rendered.

ACT HONOURABLY EVEN IN THE FACE OF TEMPTATION
It is easy to be an honourable person if there is no temptation, or if your honour is never challenged. But how honourable are you in doing your expense reports or in reporting your income tax. It is vital to demonstrate integrity, to stand up for your belief and to resist pressure to do what you know to be wrong.

GUARD WHAT IS ENTRUSTED TO YOU
In trusting, people tend to share their greatest fears or most embarrassing moments because they trust each other. To do this with someone you do not know well is to expose yourself to the risk of being criticized or rejected, so guard what is entrusted to you either materials or words.

ACKNOWLEDGE YOUR MISTAKES
This too sounds strange, but the person who is willing to admit mistakes and imperfections is more likely to inspire confidence than one who never acknowledges being wrong or having weakness.

TELL THE TRUTH ABOUT YOURSELF AND OTHERS
To attract the trust of others, it is also vital to always be truthful in regards to other people. If you are known to tell lies about other people, why should anyone want to associate with you?

BE A SOURCE OF STRENGTH

It may sound contradictory, but if you want to have people to lean on in your times of trouble, you have to provide a source of strength to them when they are in need. No one is strong all the time, and even the weakest of us has the power to provide support to those who trust and rely on us to be there for them.
